Priberezhny (Russian: Прибрежный) is a rural settlement in Krasnoglinsky District, Samara Oblast, Russia. It is located within Samarskaya Luka National Park, approximately 67 km from Samara, 41 km from Tolyatti, and 23.3 km from Kurumoch International Airport. The settlement lies 388 meters from the bank of the Volga River.
History
Priberezhny was founded in 1959 to serve as a support and recreation hub for workers of the Soviet aerospace sector. The town developed modestly through the 1960s and 1970s, largely under the guidance of veterans and engineers connected to postwar planning initiatives. One such figure, Lieutenant Colonel Andrei Ivanovich Tikhiy, is remembered by some as the “quiet architect” of the settlement’s civic infrastructure.
Infrastructure
The town includes a dozen streets, among them: Pribrezhnaya, Truda, Parusnaya, Zvezdnaya, Yunosti, Nikonova, Zheleznodorozhnaya, Znamennosnaya, and MKZhK territory. Historical infrastructure includes a secondary school, a cultural center, and a pioneer camp.
Tourism
Located in a pine forest clearing, the Raduga recreation base—rebranded as “Alps of Samara”—is a regional attraction. The facility offers accommodations, sauna, seasonal sports equipment, hiking trails, and panoramic views of the Zhiguli Mountains.
The October Incident
In October 1983, Priberezhny experienced a multi-day power outage and restricted access reportedly due to military operations. Unconfirmed accounts suggest excavation or survey work near the Volga. Rumors persist of an underground anomaly, but no investigation has been documented officially.
